Virtual PLCs
Virtual PLCs (vPLCs) are fully containerized, software-based PLCs (Soft PLCs) that bring unmatched flexibility, scalability, and cybersecurity to industrial automation and control systems. Virtual PLCs can run anywhere: edge gateways, industrial PCs (IPCs), on-premises servers, or cloud platforms, providing real-time control right where it's needed and freeing businesses from hardware vendor lock-in. Their containerized architecture enables faster deployment, easier IT/OT integration, and improved cybersecurity compared to traditional PLCs. Virtual PLCs easily integrate with other IIoT and Industry 4.0 technologies, offer true remote management, and feature seamless updates, empowering businesses to maximize performance, reduce hardware costs, and future-proof their automation infrastructure.
Ultimate Cybersecurity
Virtual PLCs (vPLCs) are a type of software-defined PLC (Soft PLC, also known as PC-based control) that run on general-purpose computing hardware instead of traditional PLCs. While both Virtual PLCs and Soft PLCs are software-based, Virtual PLCs run in highly secure, containerized environments, whereas Soft PLCs run directly on the host operating system. Containers provide stronger cybersecurity through isolation, as each vPLC instance operates in its own protected space with its own firewall, minimizing the risk of data breaches and malicious attacks by threat actors.
The best Virtual PLCs implement Zero Trust: a network security model that assumes no device is inherently trustworthy, regardless of its location in or outside the network perimeter. Zero Trust architecture mandates strict identity verification, least-privilege access, and continuous monitoring of every connection request. In practical terms, the vPLC securely connects to a Zero Trust access control server, which then ensures only authorized users or devices may access the vPLC. Since the vPLC only makes an outbound connection, the firewall can be completely closed to incoming connections, virtually eliminating the attack surface.
(VPN servers are insufficient, as they allow unrestricted access between all connected devices.)
Our Solution: OTee Virtual PLCs
Edgenaut is OTee's premier solution partner in the United States.
OTee’s Virtual PLC platform stands out by combining true cloud-native flexibility with industrial-grade reliability, all while being based entirely on open standards to help customers avoid vendor lock-in. OTee’s Virtual PLC solution is built on the IEC 61131-3 programming standard and allows automation engineers to write, simulate, and deploy control logic from any web browser to any Linux-based edge computing device. OTee also boasts essential enterprise-grade features such as zero‑trust cybersecurity, role‑based access control (RBAC), a decentralized publish‑subscribe data framework to enable real‑time insights, and secure vPLC fleet management, all from a single web-based interface. These capabilities, paired with AI‑assisted code generation, support for CI/CD workflows, and seamless integration with modern data analytics and AI/ML systems, make OTee’s Virtual PLC platform much more than a replacement for traditional PLCs. It's a comprehensive platform for enabling IT/OT convergence, digital transformation, and tightly integrated, highly efficient industrial control systems.
